Stripe parameter_unknown: the request has unexpected parameters

Stripe returns parameter_unknown? The request has one or more unexpected parameters. Stripe says to remove them and try again.

Reviewed October 22, 2026

What it means in plain English

Stripe's error-code list defines parameter_unknown as: the request contains one or more unexpected parameters. Remove these and try again.

Nearby codes on that list are different. parameter_missing means one or more required values are missing, and Stripe says to check the API documentation for the values required to create or modify that resource. resource_missing means the ID provided is not valid: the resource does not exist, or an ID for a different resource was provided. livemode_mismatch means test and live mode keys, requests, and objects are only available within the corresponding mode. See Stripe error: No such price / No such customer (resource_missing).

Likely causes

  • The call sends a parameter Stripe does not accept on that resource.
  • A required value is absent. That code is parameter_missing, not this one.
  • The ID is for a missing resource, or the key and the object are in different modes. Those codes are resource_missing and livemode_mismatch.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Read the error code. Follow this page for parameter_unknown.
  2. Remove the unexpected parameters and try the request again. That is the resolution Stripe prints for this code.
  3. If the code is parameter_missing, a required value is missing. Stripe says to check which values that resource requires.
  4. If the code is resource_missing, the ID is not valid for the reason in Stripe's description above.
  5. If the code is livemode_mismatch, the key, the request, and the object are not all in the same mode. The price and customer page covers that mix-up.

How to check it worked

  • The same API call no longer returns parameter_unknown.
  • If Stripe returns a different code, it is one of the other codes on the error-code list, not this one.
